The preventive role of Snell’s law in mode conversion from Z- to whistler-mode waves in an inhomogeneous magnetoplasma with a low density

Electromagnetic waves with different modes, such as Z-, whistler-, LO- and RX- modes are found in different regions of the Earth magnetosphere and the magnetosphere of other planets. Since whistler-mode waves influence the behavior of the magnetosphere, and they are used as experimental tools to investigate the upper atmosphere, they are important. On the other hand, the mode conversion process...

Analytical Solution of the O-X Mode Conversion Problem

The excitation of a slow extraordinary wave in a overdense plasma from an ordinary wave impinging on the critical layer in the plane spanned by the density gradient and magnetic field is solved analytically by formulating the problem in terms of a parabolic cylinder equation. A formula for the angular dependence of the transmission coefficient is derived.

Mode conversion in the cochlea?

It is suggested that the frequency selectivity of the ear may be based on the phenomenon of mode conversion rather than critical layer resonance. The distinction is explained and supporting evidence discussed. PACS numbers: 43.64.Kc, 43.66.Ba

Numerical simulation of fracture mode transition in ductile plates

Fracture mode of ductile solids can vary depending on the history of stress state the material experienced. For example, ductile plates under remote in-plane loading are often found to rupture in mode I or mixed mode I/III. The distinct crack patterns are observed in many different metals and alloys, but until now the underlying physical principles, though highly debated, remain unresolved. Her...

Whistler-mode Propagation in the Collisional Ionosphere of Venus

Waves identified as whistler-mode waves have been observed in the nightside ionosphere of Venus by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. These waves are propagating in a collisional, weakly magnetized ionosphere, and it has been argued that as such they should be damped through collisions, and the wave should not retain the characteristics of the whistler-mode because of non-linear modifications to the di...
